In many respects, this years New Hampshire Republican primary resembled that of 1980, with the victorious John McCain nearly matching the winning percentage of Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush following in the footsteps of his badly defeated father. Twenty years ago, though, the elder Bush was able to find a toehold in some of the strongholds of moderate Republicanism in New Hampshire the major academic communities of Durham and Hanover, and the seacoast city of Portsmouth. This year, McCain swamped "W" virtually everywhere, although McCain rolled up his most impressive percentages not in the conservative communities where Reagan ran best in 1980, but more moderate ones such as Hanover.
