BUSH: HOLDING THE REPUBLICAN BASE

State-by-State Results Page
National charts and results from the states that have already voted.
George W. Bush won South Carolina’s Republican primary in large part because of his ability to carry the state’s GOP strongholds. Bush swept the top eight Republican counties, as measured by support for the GOP presidential ticket in the fall of 1996. Most of the counties are among the most populous in South Carolina.

As elsewhere in the state, turnout was up dramatically in these GOP hotbeds from the party’s last presidential primary four years ago.
