Turnout for the Republican presidential primary in South Carolina has steadily increased over the years, although it has yet to exceed 25 percent of those who cast ballots in the November presidential election. That is a far cry from New Hampshire, where the primary turnout is frequently over 60% of the number that turn out to cast ballots in the fall.

South Carolina does not have voter registration by party. Any of the state’s 2.1 million registered voters can participate in the Feb. 19 Republican presidential primary. In the chart below, an asterisk (*) notes the highest turnout in each category. A dash (-) indicates that no primary was held.
