SOUTH CAROLINA PRIMARY WINNERS AND MARGINS

State-by-State Results Page
National charts and results from the states that have already voted.
Since its inception in 1980, the Republican presidential primary in South Carolina has been a pivotal event in the GOP nominating process. Yet the primary balloting has never been close.

Bob Dole won the Republican primary in 1996 over Pat Buchanan by 16 percentage points. Ronald Reagan (in 1980) and George Bush (in 1988 and 1992) won the earlier primaries in the Palmetto State by at least 25 points.

For George W. Bush, South Carolina has been viewed as a firewall, in part because of his father’s success and the support the younger Bush enjoys from much of the state GOP establishment. Yet for both Reagan and George Bush, victory in South Carolina came on the heels of big wins in New Hampshire. Dole is the only Republican candidate to win the South Carolina primary after a loss in New Hampshire, and his defeat there had been by the narrow margin of 1 percentage point.

In the chart below, an asterisk (*) indicates an incumbent president. A dash (-) indicates that no primary was held.
